How It Works
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100). Total = Bill + Tip. When splitting, both the total and the tip itself are divided evenly across the number of people entered, so everyone's share includes their portion of the gratuity.
Worked Example
A $64.50 bill with an 18% tip comes to $76.11 total. Split four ways, that's about $19.03 per person, which includes each person's $2.90 share of the $11.61 tip. Bump the tip to 20% on the same bill and the per-person share rises to about $19.35 — a small difference per person, but worth checking before splitting a larger group bill where rounding errors add up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's a standard tip percentage?
Norms vary widely by country and by service type, and this calculator doesn't take a position on it — the quick-select buttons (15/18/20%) are simply common reference points, not a recommendation.
Does it split the tip evenly even if people ordered different amounts?
Yes, this version divides the total bill and tip evenly across everyone. For itemized, per-person amounts you'd need to calculate each person's share of the bill separately before applying the tip.
